Dua Witr
Introduction
Dua Witr is a special supplication recited during Solat Witr, the final prayer of the night. Witr is performed after Isyak and is most commonly prayed after Tarawih in Ramadan or after Tahajjud at night. The word witr means odd, reflecting the odd number of rak‘ah in which this prayer is performed. Dua Witr is a moment of deep humility, where a believer pours out their hopes, fears, and reliance upon Allah before ending the night in remembrance and submission.

The Significance of Dua Witr
Solat Witr holds a special place in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ consistently performed Witr and encouraged his ummah not to neglect it. Dua Witr is a supplication that seeks guidance, forgiveness, protection, and strength in faith. It allows the servant to reconnect with Allah in the quiet of the night, when hearts are most sincere and distractions are few.
The Text of Dua Witr
Note: In Dua Witr, the wording is often recited in the plural form (“us”) instead of the singular.
Dua Witr (Rumi / Transliteration)
Allahumma ihdina feeman hadayta,
wa ‘afina feeman ‘afayta,
wa tawallana feeman tawallayta,
wa barik lana feema a‘tayta,
wa qina sharra ma qadayta,
fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda ‘alayk,
innahu la yadhillu man walayta,
wa la ya‘izzu man ‘adayta,
tabarakta Rabbana wa ta‘alayta.
Dua Witr (English Meaning)
O Allah, guide us among those You have guided,
grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being,
take us into Your care among those You have taken into Your care,
bless for us what You have given,
and protect us from the evil of what You have decreed.
Indeed, You decree and none can decree over You.
Whom You befriend will never be humiliated,
and whom You oppose will never be honored.
Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted.
When and How Dua Witr Is Recited
Dua Witr is usually recited in the last rak‘ah of Solat Witr, after rising from rukuk, with the hands raised in supplication. It may be recited silently or aloud, depending on the practice and situation. A person may also add personal duas after completing the prescribed supplication.
Spiritual Reflection
Dua Witr reminds believers that guidance, honor, and protection come only from Allah. It strengthens reliance on His decree and nurtures humility in the heart. Ending the night prayer with Dua Witr allows the believer to entrust their life, worries, and hopes to Allah before resting.
